What Jefferson believed were threats was Britain militarily and culturally, but also the idea that we would [be governed by] a populist that would not be guided by data, that would not be guided by facts, that would be guided by authority, priestly or monarchical or aristocratic, that would push us back to the old world.
Jefferson was apparently foreseeing the modern Republican Party.
